Only Thomas Kincaid wants to be “easy to love”
by Todd ~ July 20th, 2009. Filed under: Magazines.I’m a little late to this (as you can see by the April date in the photo above), but New York magazine has revamped their art listings. One of the big changes is folding the previously separate “photography” category in with the rest of the art. Conceptually this makes sense (the New Yorker did this too a while back), but it’s a pain for anyone like me who really just wants to see photo shows without hunting for a little camera icon. And I think it leads to less photo coverage as the combined sections are most likely shorter than the two separate ones were.
If you look down at the bottom of the section legend, you’ll notice “The Meter”, which rates a show along a range from “Easy to Love” to“Spiky and Transgressive”. Have to wonder if there is an artist on Earth who would welcome being labeled “Easy to Love”. Maybe Thomas Kincaid or Anne Geddes, but they’re not showing in Chelsea.

Jeff Koons?

That made me laugh out loud. It took me a bit to recall the flower dogs and inflated balloon animals. “Michael Jackson and Bubbles” is front of mind at the moment, and I was trying to think of how Koons’ home-made porn could be considered “easy to love”. But it also reminded me that it is possible to make art that is joyful and fun without being saccharine.
