Parr Defends/Explains His Reality Show Participation

Martin Parr will serve as one of three judges for the new UK television show “Picture This”, starting… The Independent has a profile of Parr which includes his explanation of why he agreed to participate . After reading the article and considering Parr’s body of work, it doesn’t seem all that odd and perhaps further explains the furor that accompanied his entry into Magnum back in 1993. But its obvious he cares a great deal about the craft of photography and in the end that’s why he agreed to take his part in what’s generally considered to be a pretty tawdry bit of entertainment fluff.

“My thinking was that if we’ve got this very good slot to give oxygen to photography, it’s probably good to be involved to make sure it’s not bad. TV-makers usually don’t know much about photography.”

Channel 4 has created a participatory site for the show, allowing “regular folks” to submit photography and exchange criticisms. (The other show judges are Brett Rogers of The Photographer’s Gallery in London and Alex Proud, a dealer.)
